Summary

This is a tobacco trial that was originally part of the Florida Engle class action litigation that was decertified in 2006. Michael Johnson died from lung cancer in 1996 at 36 years old. He began smoking at the age of 13, and smoked Kool Menthol cigarettes, which were manufactured by Brown and Williamson. The lawsuit was filed by his wife, Cynthia Robinson, and his son, Michael Johnson, who was 14 when his father died. The jury found for the plaintiffs, awarding her more than $16 million in compensatory damages and $23 billion in punitive damages.
