Melba Bolton v. John Crane Co.

VERDICT

Trial
03/18/24 – 03/25/24

Summary

Decedent Chris Bolton developed mesothelioma after working with John Crane Inc. gaskets containing asbestos. This work occurred before John Crane warned workers of the risks of asbestos exposure, yet studies had shown the link between asbestos and health problems for decades before this.

Plaintiff Melba Bolton, Mr. Bolton’s wife, claims that John Crane failed to adequately warn her husband of the risks of asbestos exposure. She alleges that exposure to the asbestos within John Crane gaskets played a significant role in Mr. Bolton’s mesothelioma, as the same type of asbestos present in these gaskets is found in his lung tissue.

Defendant John Crane claims that their gaskets do not expose workers to asbestos, as they are tightly sealed. Additionally, Mr. Bolton worked in other fields and was exposed to greater levels of asbestos while cutting through insulation.

Outcome

Verdict for plaintiff.
Total damages: $1.75 million.
