Dr. Alberto Casaretto developed fatal mesothelioma after using talc-based products for decades, which eventually took his life in 2022. Casaretto's family sues manufacturer Johnson & Johnson, arguing that asbestos present in the talc caused his cancer.
Christopher Tisi, representing the family, presents evidence he claims shows J&J knew about risks of asbestos contaminating the powder, yet attempted to cover it up. And, even though the company could have replaced talc with corn starch as a safer alternative, it refused to.
J&J claims that its talc is safe and does not cause mesothelioma. Emphasizing the safety procedures J&J followed, attorneys representing the company contend that studies showing asbestos in talc are fundamentally flawed.
Verdict for plaintiff.
Total damages: $20 million.
